A process for character illustration using Illustrator

This began with a simple sketch which I had brought into Adobe Illustrator and began to trace over using pen tool.
Colorizing in beginning stages

Here I started bringing in colors to the character, capturing shadows, highlights and stroke widths. I love a depth to cartoon eyes, exaggerating them more so than the character itself. This is apart of my personal style of art.
My first attempt at this character illustration done in Adobe Illustrator. I explored many different colors and layers to achieve this look. I wanted a more realistic feel to a cartoon style. A simplistic background of varying colors worked well for this illustration.

A new approach to this illustration

Months later I decided to recreate this illustration. After receiving some feedback, I made it more simple for a more cartoon design and less realistic. Although I kept the same basic idea for colors, I changed some of the strokes widths and put in less colors. Everything was simplified but still captured the style I was portraying. I changed up some of the colors as well in the background. This is the final version of this illustration.
